The spotted wing drosophila lays its eggs in soft skin fruits as they ripen. Spreading across the United States and presents a particular threat to the fruit industry. Laurel wilt is a fungal disease transmitted by an exotic ambrosia beetle that affects redbay trees as well as other members of Lauraceae such as avocado.
